He felt a tightness in his throat, a peculiar mix of nausea and exhilaration. John sat frozen, staring at the student newspaper headline: "University to Close." His hands felt cold, his palms slick with sweat. He saw the world through a lens of swirling emotion.

The news felt surreal, almost abstract, until he saw her. Across the quad, standing beneath the skeletal branches of a winter-bare oak tree, was Mary. She looked bewildered and beautiful, her scarf a vibrant splash of color against the gray sky. He watched, captivated, as she ran a hand through her hair, a gesture he found endlessly fascinating.

Suddenly, the closing wasn't about deadlines or transcripts. It was about losing the possibility of seeing her. He felt a desperate urge to cross the quad, to be near her, to somehow make this right. He started walking.
