The afternoon light cast long shadows as she saw Mr. Rodriguez walking towards her back door. Her breath hitched. She quickly adjusted her hair.

“Good afternoon, Ms. Ramirez,” he said, his voice polite. “I was wondering if I might be able to use a small corner of your yard for a rose garden. I’ve always admired your lawn.”

Her heart skipped a beat. She could barely manage a nod. “Of course, Mr. Rodriguez. Take… take as much space as you need.”

She found herself spending hours researching the best roses, imagining their vibrant colors and the pleasant fragrance they would share. She couldn't shake the feeling of anticipation.
