The scent of fresh-cut wood and varnish wafted through the air, carried by the summer breeze. From his window, Mark watched as the new owners of the house across the street began their renovation.

He felt an unfamiliar eagerness. His own apartment, decorated in a bland, predictable style, suddenly felt suffocating. He decided to completely rearrange his living room.

He cleared the furniture, scrubbing floors. He felt lighter, as if the physical act of moving and organizing was freeing his mind. He worked until late into the night, energized and exhilarated.
