The email was stark, to the point. The scholarship committee regretted… A wave of disappointment, quickly suppressed, was followed by a flicker of something else.

He went to the community garden, the familiar scent of earth and growing plants filling his senses. He began weeding, pulling stubborn roots from the soil with renewed vigor.

The sun beat down on his back, but he didn't stop. He was reminded of the seeds planted, the effort invested, the eventual harvest. This was his project, his destiny. The garden, and his future, would flourish.
