"Ava, we need your speed. We’re moving you to forward." The coach's announcement was brief, the meaning clear. Ava, a defensive specialist, was being asked to reinvent herself.

That night, she couldn't stop moving. She paced in her room,shadowboxing and visualizing plays. She spent hours studying offensive strategies, the patterns of the game taking on a new significance.

The first practice was a whirlwind of movement. She felt light on her feet, the court a vast expanse of opportunity. Her passes were crisper, her attacks more decisive. At the end of the session, a coach gave her a nod. It was small, but it was enough.
