The lawyer’s words echoed in his ears: “a clerical error.” A different life, a different diagnosis, all wrapped up in a misplaced document. He’d never felt so … light. Charles, once confined to an easy chair, suddenly saw the world through a new lens. It was brighter.

He immediately called the travel agent and booked a trip to the Galapagos Islands. The thought of witnessing the unique creatures, of snorkeling in the clear waters, filled him with an inner warmth. The itinerary felt like a promise.

He spent the next few hours clearing out his cluttered apartment. Every object, every piece of furniture, that had weighed him down was dispatched. He looked at the dust motes dancing in the sunbeams and laughed out loud.

He began writing, something he hadn’t done in years. The words flowed from him, spilling onto the page with an energy he had thought lost.
