Gemotions

The aroma of freshly baked bread filled the small apartment, a scent that always tugged at Anya’s heart. She followed the delicious trail to the kitchen, finding Leo humming over a bowl of what looked suspiciously like borscht. He turned, a shy smile gracing his lips, and launched into a halting but surprisingly clear greeting in Ukrainian. Anya’s breath caught. It was… beautiful. She felt a lightness bloom in her chest, a sudden urge to dance. She grabbed his hands, the flour dusting their skin, and said, “Come on, let’s go outside.”

The afternoon sun poured over them as they walked in a nearby park, hand in hand. She spoke to him in rapid-fire Ukrainian, testing him, teasing him. Leo, blushing, stumbled through a response, his accent thick, but the effort, the devotion, was evident. Anya’s energy surged. She skipped ahead, pointing at a cluster of children playing, then back at Leo, her eyes shining.

Later, curled up on the sofa, she grabbed her Ukrainian textbooks, something she had neglected for months. She began to read aloud, Leo listening intently. She felt an exhilarating focus, a desire to learn alongside him, to share the language of her heart.
