Rain lashed against the windows, mirroring the storm brewing in Chloe's chest. She found Mark, her partner, in the living room, meticulously practicing Gaelic phrases. He looked up, his face a mixture of nervousness and excitement, and began to speak to her in broken, but sincere, Irish. The words, however clumsy, resonated deeply. A warmth began to spread through her.

Chloe walked over to him and joined him on the rug. She started asking him questions, prompting him to form sentences. A smile slowly crept onto her face as the conversation took place in a mix of Irish and English.

The fire in the hearth crackled, mirroring the renewed focus that had taken root in her. She pulled out her own dusty Gaelic textbooks, vowing to dust them off and resume her own efforts. The rain seemed less menacing, the grayness less pervasive. A sense of purpose, a feeling of being fully alive, washed over her.
