The review sat on the countertop, a cruel splash of black ink against the pristine white marble. Chef Antoine ran a hand through his hair, a nervous gesture he usually suppressed. The critic, Madame Dubois, had savaged his duck confit, calling it "a greasy monument to culinary mediocrity." His stomach churned. He wasn't usually one to let criticism get to him, but this felt different.

He immediately grabbed his apron, tying it with a renewed vigour. He marched into the kitchen. The stainless steel gleamed, reflecting the harsh fluorescent lights. "Tonight," he announced to his startled sous chef, "we are going to create something… extraordinary." He began sketching feverishly on a notepad, ideas exploding onto the page.

Later, he was in the thick of it, the heat of the oven washing over him. He tasted a sauce, his eyes narrowed, the muscles in his jaw tightening. This was more than just about making a meal; it was about proving something.
