Gemotions

The attic air hung thick with dust motes dancing in the lone sunbeam. Clara coughed, waving a hand to clear her vision as she sifted through the boxes. Found it! A brittle, cream-colored envelope, her mother's handwriting elegant even after all these years. Inside, a typed letter. Not addressed to anyone, just a date and a crisp, bold declaration: "Resignation." A wave of heat flushed through Clara’s chest.

She read the words, her eyes scanning each line. Her mother had resigned from a job she had thought she loved, a job Clara had always assumed had been forced upon her by circumstance. The final paragraph, a quiet defiance, caught Clara by surprise. She closed her eyes for a moment, picturing her mother’s younger face, her unyielding spirit.

Back downstairs, Clara walked to her desk, ignoring the pile of half-finished reports and emails. She reached for the art supplies she'd been neglecting for months. The canvas, pristine and white, beckoned. Tonight, the world would have to wait. She had work to do.
