The whine of the circular saw sliced through the morning calm. David felt a familiar heat creep up his neck. He'd poured his heart, sweat, and savings into his own small garden, a tiny sanctuary that was now overshadowed by the cacophony emanating from the Andersons' property. They were expanding. Again.

He gripped his trowel so hard he felt the metal bite into his palm. His meticulously arranged petunias seemed to droop under the shadow of the encroaching construction. "Well, that's just fantastic," he muttered under his breath, watching as the new foundation posts were driven into the ground. He retreated inside, slamming the screen door behind him with unnecessary force, his jaw tight.
