"Did you see the plans?" The woman’s voice was dripping with excitement. "A wrap-around porch!" Alex, leaning against his crumbling fence, heard the conversation. The new house was massive, an ostentatious display of wealth. He’d never even spoken to the new owners.

He stood there, a knot forming in his stomach. He kicked at a loose stone, a surge of irritation coursing through him. He hadn't ever gotten around to fixing the broken fence. His old clothes and his old life. He would make the call to the fence company, even if it meant using money meant for a new mattress.
