“Well, that’s just great,” Sarah said, her voice dripping with acid. She reread the email, the phrases, “insufficient funding” and “highly competitive pool of applicants,” mocking her from the screen. She felt a knot tighten in her stomach, a feeling of being unfairly treated.

She slammed the laptop shut with a loud click, the sudden silence intensifying her feelings. She wanted to scream, to lash out at someone, anyone. The carefully constructed façade of composure she normally projected began to crack. She felt the urge to throw something, to break something.

She looked around the room, her gaze landing on a framed photo of herself, smiling brightly at graduation. She glared at the image, her face contorted with frustration and a dark resentment.
