"Denial." The word, written in bold, was the cruelest summary of his months of tireless effort. Adrian felt a sudden chill, a coldness that started in his stomach and spread through his limbs. He leaned back in his chair, his body rigid, his eyes fixed on the ceiling.

He felt a tightening in his chest, a sensation of being trapped, suffocated. He wanted to scream, to smash something, to make the feeling, this terrible, crushing feeling, go away. He closed his eyes, his fists clenching, and tried to regulate his breathing, but it was to no avail.

He abruptly stood up and slammed his fist on his desk, the noise startling him. He stalked towards the window, staring out at the world, feeling alienated and alone.
