"Sir, there’s nothing I can do," the attendant repeated, her voice monotone. David found himself staring at the woman’s nametag, as if he could will her to change. He’d booked this flight months ago. He had a contract to sign. Important clients would be in attendance.

He could feel a flush creeping up his neck. "This is completely unacceptable," he said, his voice clipped. The attendant didn’t react. He knew what she was thinking. "A nobody," he muttered under his breath.

He leaned back in his seat, the plastic cold against his back. He needed to get a grip. He was the only one who seemed to care about what he wanted. He pulled out his phone and started to type a lengthy, scathing email.
