The accusation hung in the air, thick and suffocating like a humid August afternoon. Maya’s cheeks burned. Mr. Henderson, his face a mask of disappointment, had laid the two essays side-by-side, the similarities starkly visible under the fluorescent lights. A tremor ran through her, starting at her toes and ending in a tight clench of her jaw. She gripped the edge of the table, knuckles white.
