The room seemed to shrink. He felt the blood drain from his face, leaving him cold. The professor’s words, a careful recitation of supposed evidence, seemed to echo in the cavern of his mind. The carefully constructed argument that he'd poured his time into felt meaningless and now tainted. The very air around him felt heavy.

He had always been a diligent student, a dedicated learner. The thought that he could be seen as anything less felt like a personal affront. He pushed himself to stand. He needed air, the space to think, to process this unbelievable turn of events. He turned and abruptly left.
