He slammed the door, the sound echoing through the otherwise quiet apartment. His hands trembled as he walked towards the window, staring out at the rain-swept street. The rejection stung worse than he'd anticipated. He’d poured his heart and soul into that application, crafting a presentation he thought was flawless.

A text message pinged. It was Maya. "Guess what! I got the job!" The exclamation mark felt like a jab. He tossed the phone onto the couch.

He thought of all the shared lunches, the late-night brainstorming sessions, the promises they'd made to each other. Now, the victory felt hollow.

He felt a sudden need to leave. He took his keys and left.
