He re-read the email, the words blurring before his eyes. It was a form letter, devoid of any personal touch. He’d spent weeks preparing for the application, losing sleep over every detail. His best friend, David, had gotten the job.

He heard the triumphant laughter from the other room, David was on the phone, already discussing his plans with the team, he heard every word through the thin walls of their shared apartment.

He tried to focus on his own work, but his hands were shaking so badly he couldn't type. Finally, he slammed the laptop shut and went to the back garden to get some air.
