The champagne flute felt suddenly heavy in Amelia's hand. She watched David across the room, his easy laughter a physical blow. He was surrounded by a gaggle of people, all hanging on his every word. Her jaw tightened. It was the same charming act he’d used on her, then discarded so readily.

She’d thought she’d moved on, but the sight of him, so effortlessly at ease, sparked a fire in her chest. A slow burn of... something. She took a deliberate sip, the bubbles doing nothing to soothe the sudden heat in her cheeks.

She considered going over, forcing a smile, feigning nonchalance. Instead, she turned and made a beeline for the bar, requesting the strongest drink they had.
