The music seemed to amplify the clatter of the silverware as Sarah watched James. He was laughing with her replacement, Amy, across the table. Her skin prickled. He looked genuinely happy. That was the worst part.

She felt a tightening in her shoulders. She carefully placed her napkin on her lap, then rose, murmuring something about needing air.

Outside, the cool night air did little to dispel the sudden, unwelcome chill that had settled over her. She took a deep breath, trying to steady her racing pulse. She found herself clutching her purse tightly, knuckles white.
