The dinner party had been an exercise in carefully crafted facades. Everyone, especially Eleanor, was trying to showcase their "success." Eleanor had always been captivated by the tales of Alex, the "renowned surgeon," his stories of saving lives and battling rare diseases. She'd always imagined him as a man of great skill.

"So, Alex," she began, attempting a conversational tone, "what was the most challenging case you had this week?"

Alex choked on his water. His face turned a shade of red, and a bead of sweat trickled down his temple. He stammered something about paperwork and a busy schedule. Eleanor watched him, the carefully constructed mask of confidence she had admired slowly crumbling. Her appetite vanished.

She picked at her food, the flavors suddenly bland and uninteresting. The candlelight flickered, casting long, distorted shadows on the wall, mirroring the distortion of the reality she had accepted.
