"Severe… alcohol abuse… and cirrhosis of the liver." The words seemed to echo in John's head. He looked down at his stomach, his heart racing. He’d gone in with indigestion, not impending death. The doctor’s concerned frown, the furrow of his brow, was a condemnation.

He felt a sudden, hot rage boiling inside him. He slammed the file on the desk, the sound startling the receptionist. He thought of his quiet evenings, the occasional beer. He looked at the window as if something else out there would explain this nightmare. He couldn't speak, he just wanted to scream.
