“Mr. Jones, you have a history of… severe heroin addiction.” The doctor's voice cracked with a sort of pity that made Mark’s stomach clench. He’d come in for a stiff neck. He was a retired accountant. He'd never touched a drug in his life. The man had to be wrong.

He felt a burning sensation in his chest. A red haze blurred the corners of the room. He imagined the other patient, the struggle, the desperation. He wanted to scream. He was not this person. He slammed his fist on the table, the papers scattering. "This is a mistake!" he roared.
