He stared at the email, the stark black text a mocking reminder of his perceived importance. “Due to unforeseen circumstances… gathering postponed.” Daniel tossed his phone onto the desk. His gut twisted into a tight knot. He'd spent the entire week subtly hinting about how much he was looking forward to the event, dropping broad hints about the new suit he'd purchased. He'd even turned down a lucrative freelance gig to make sure he was available. The knot tightened further. He grabbed the heavy glass paperweight and hurled it against the wall, the sound a satisfying, if temporary, release.
