Gemotions

"Well, that's just… fantastic," Martha muttered, the card dangling limp from her fingertips. She’d been hoping, praying even, for something a bit more… meaningful. The card depicted a picture of generic flowers, the kind you’d buy at a gas station.

She crumpled the card into a ball, then immediately smoothed it out again, as if she couldn't decide whether to destroy it or examine it. The anonymous greeting card lay on her kitchen table. The silence of the house pressed in on her.

She picked it up, then walked to the trash can in the kitchen. She thought better of it, walked to the fridge and put a magnet on the front, next to her favorite photos. She made herself a cup of tea, finding no solace in the hot drink.
