"The porch swing *has* to go," Charles declared. "It's a hazard." His sister, Olivia, just stared at him. The swing had been their grandmother’s favorite spot, where she told them stories.

He knew what Olivia was thinking: he hadn't visited much in the last few years. He'd been "busy," building his career, making his mark. But now, he was here, ready to take care of things. Or so he thought.

He felt the prickle of defensiveness. He’d offered to handle the legal paperwork. He’d driven the furthest. He was being practical.

He started to explain the safety concerns again, but the words felt hollow even to him. Olivia turned away, silently, and walked into the house, her shoulders slumped. He felt a sting behind his eyes.
