It was the quietest moment he'd had all day, relaxing on the sofa with a glass of scotch and a book. Then, the notification came, a digital serpent slithering across the screen of his phone. The DNA results were in. He read the results, then threw the phone across the room.

His face flushed crimson. The intricate details of his family history, the stories he had been told, the legacy he was supposed to inherit, all felt like worthless trinkets now.
