"We know," the lead engineer stated, his voice devoid of any warmth. "We've already been through this. Your design… it's… remarkably similar. The patent process is rigorous, Mr. Bell. You should have done your research." Thomas felt a cold knot form in the pit of his stomach. He’d been so sure, so convinced of the originality of his design. He'd seen the future, and now, it appeared someone had gotten there first. The engineer's polite dismissal, the way his eyes glazed over with practiced disinterest, added to the feeling of being utterly dismissed. He swallowed hard, the muscles in his throat constricting. He could barely muster a response.
