The news anchor’s voice, clear and concise, filled the television screen. "Another groundbreaking invention, however, it appears the idea was already patented." David sat frozen on the couch, the remote clutched tightly in his hand. The device on the screen was his, almost identical to his design. He hadn't been first. A sense of nausea washed over him. The excitement he’d felt, the dreams he’d nurtured, evaporated in an instant. He switched off the television, the sudden silence pressing down on him. He felt a profound sense of loss, a void where hope had once resided. He rose and paced his small living space, his footsteps heavy and out of sync with his racing heart.
