The news hit hard, like a punch to the gut. The university's announcement hung in the air, a cruel, mocking joke. The scholarship, the only thing that had made her college dream possible, was gone.

She blinked rapidly, trying to clear her vision. A wave of nausea rolled over her. She excused herself from the common room, needing to get out, away from the judgmental eyes of others.

The next day, she skipped class, and ignored all calls. She found herself staring blankly at the ceiling, feeling a deep emptiness.
