“There’s been an error,” the bursar had told her, a practiced, almost bored tone in his voice. "We'll need the funds returned." Chloe sat there, stunned, the blood roaring in her ears.

The room seemed to tilt slightly. She gripped the edge of the chair, her knuckles white. She felt a fire that spread throughout her, a deep and unyielding rage.

She walked out, ignoring the bursar’s continued apologies. That night, she didn't eat. She lay in bed, staring at the ceiling and breathing shallowly.
