I felt a surge of heat rise in my chest as I read the email. My scholarship, gone. A mistake. My stomach twisted into a painful knot. I had poured my heart and soul into securing this funding, and for what?

My hands began to tremble. I sat there at the kitchen table, staring blankly at the coffee cup in front of me, its contents now cold and unappetizing. The world seemed to shrink, the walls closing in.

I went to my room, shut the door, and lay on the bed, staring up at the ceiling and trying not to cry.
