The air crackled with a strange tension, a disconnect she couldn't explain. "You've got a familiar face," Ben had stated, his brow furrowed in concentration. Then, the conversation had moved on, and so had he. She'd told him about their shared childhood, the secret hideaways, the silly games. But his responses were polite, distant, and as hollow as the shell of a forgotten dream. Her chest felt constricted, as if a weight was pressing down on her. The smile she’d plastered on her face felt brittle, and she abruptly excused herself, needing to escape the suffocating atmosphere.
