The venue was ostentatious, a clear representation of his mother's meticulous taste. He took a seat in the back, the formal dress felt like a cage. He watched as his brother, the golden boy, prepared to give his speech. He was sure it would be eloquent, heartfelt.

His stomach clenched when his name was called. He walked to the stage, the spotlight blinding. He felt everyone staring. He hadn't bothered to prepare.

He stood there, mute, for what felt like an eternity. He finally gave a mumbled congratulations and walked off. He immediately found an empty corner and nursed a glass of scotch. He felt the familiar ache of always being in the shadow of someone else.
