The boardroom felt suffocating. They’d announced it, the deal, in that room. That was where all the important meetings happened, and now, it was a tomb. I had stayed late to finish a presentation, and now, I was regretting that.

Mr. Henderson, our CEO, had the nerve to thank everyone for their hard work. His voice was all honeyed platitudes, his expression, fake concern. As if a thank you could undo the gut punch I felt. His words were poison.

I watched him. The man he was selling the company to stood next to him. He was a man I had spent years despising. He was now going to be my boss.

I let out a harsh laugh, a short, clipped sound that made the room fall silent. I cleared my throat, composed myself, and then I walked out.
