I leaned back in my chair, the plastic creaking under my weight. The email, the cold, impersonal words, felt like a physical blow. The company was being acquired. My job, my career, my future—all hanging precariously in the balance.

My palms were sweating, and my chest felt tight. I swiveled around, looking at the view from my window, trying to calm myself. I saw the city, and the people, and I felt nothing but a hollow emptiness.

I had been promised so much. And now? It felt like I had been lied to. I turned back to my computer, the screen's glow reflecting a cold, dead light in my eyes.
