John shifted, the cramped space amplifying the sound of his annoyance. He hated being stuck anywhere. But the smug smirk that had briefly played across Sarah's face when the elevator shuddered to a halt… that was almost unbearable. He could practically feel the condescending smirk burrowing under his skin.

He cleared his throat. "Well, this is just great." His voice was tight, the words barely escaping his lips. He imagined her thinking that his latest pitch to the marketing team was a disaster, a complete waste of time.

Sarah sighed theatrically, as if put out by his displeasure. "At least we have company," she quipped. John glared.

He ran a hand through his hair, a gesture that had been designed to project competence. He needed to escape this, to get back to his desk, to get away from Sarah and this horrible experience. He felt his face flush.
