Building model airplanes was his escape. James loved the meticulous assembly, the quiet satisfaction of seeing his creations take flight. His daughter, Amelia, had become obsessed with drone photography.

Amelia showed him her photographs, taken from the air, of his model airplane. "See, Dad? You can take pictures like this, but better, you know?" James felt his cheeks burn. He mumbled something about enjoying the hands-on aspect.
