He’d poured years of his life into this company, exceeding expectations on every project, staying late, skipping lunches.

He swallowed hard, the lump in his throat making it difficult to breathe. He walked towards the water cooler, then abruptly changed direction, heading for the fire escape. The cool metal felt good against his burning skin.
