David found the letter while clearing out his grandfather’s workshop. His grandfather, a skilled carpenter, had poured his heart into his trade. The letter was from his grandfather to his former employer, a construction company. The letter ended his employment, stating “irreconcilable differences.” David felt a sudden tightening in his chest.

He felt the old man’s bitterness, his frustration. The company had taken advantage of his grandfather. David recalled how his grandfather felt about the company, and he wanted to defend him now.

The shop, usually a source of comfort, suddenly felt oppressive. The scent of sawdust, usually pleasant, became acrid. He turned away from the work bench, suddenly unable to look at the tools. He wanted to go somewhere, anywhere, where he wouldn't see them.
