The chipped mug slipped from Leo's hand, shattering on the kitchen floor. He stared at the mess, the shards glinting like mocking teeth. Sarah, oblivious, continued rattling on about the perfect new apartment, the exciting job prospects, the vibrant city life awaiting her in California. He’d known her since kindergarten. How could she not have mentioned this *before*?

His jaw clenched. He mumbled something about needing a broom and stalked past her, deliberately avoiding her gaze. The clatter of the dustpan and brush seemed overly loud in the suddenly silent kitchen. He swept with fierce, short strokes, his back rigidly straight.

“So, you’re… happy for me?” Sarah asked, her voice hesitant.

Leo didn't answer right away. He kept sweeping, picturing her on a beach, laughing, in a place he wouldn’t be. Finally, he straightened, leaned the broom against the wall, and said, “Yeah. Totally. California sounds… great.” His voice sounded tight, even to his own ears.
