David found himself staring at the photographs on his mantelpiece, each one a shared memory, a testament to years of friendship. He didn't know what to do with them. Tonight, his best friend, Mark, had nonchalantly announced his relocation to Seattle.

He went into the kitchen to make some tea. He moved slowly. The silence in the apartment was deafening, each tick of the clock amplifying the ache in his chest. His hands trembled as he poured the boiling water into the teapot, and a few drops splashed onto the counter. He didn't bother to wipe them up.

He did not reply to Mark's question as to what he thought. He felt as if he could not form a coherent thought.
