The courier had placed the package on the kitchen counter. It had arrived with a plain, white envelope. Inside, was a letter. Its contents, a heartfelt apology, were deeply unpleasant. Elias felt a knot tightening in his gut, restricting his breath. He tossed it onto the kitchen counter.

He paced the kitchen, unable to stay still. The letter’s existence, the simple fact of its arrival, was an affront. He felt his face grow hot. His hands, even now, were twitching. He wanted to scream.

He picked up a heavy ceramic bowl from the counter, staring at it. Then slammed it into the countertop. The bowl shattered. The explosion relieved some of the tension, but left him shaking. The letter remained, a silent accusation.
