The email arrived like a slap in the face: "Your childhood home is now available!" The subject line, from a real estate aggregator, felt intentionally provocative. He scrolled through the photos, each one a fresh assault on his memories. The old oak tree in the backyard, where he'd spent countless hours climbing, was now just “landscaping.”

He threw the phone across the room, it bounced off the wall with a dull thud. His jaw tightened and his hands started to shake. He stood up, pacing back and forth. It wasn't about the house itself, it was the implied irrelevance, the dismissal of his past.

He spent the evening trying to focus on his work but found himself constantly drawn back to the listing. He'd never really dealt with his childhood. He had always tried to shut it out. Now, it was being sold like a used car, and he felt the anger rise up like bile.
