The phone call was short, to the point. “We need to talk about your brother.” A sister, actually, as it turned out. Michael felt a cold knot tighten in his stomach. His father, a man of rigid control, had been anything but.

His initial reaction was disbelief, but it quickly morphed into a corrosive anger. He found himself walking through his apartment, kicking at furniture. He wanted to rage, to break something, to scream at the absurdity of it all.

He cancelled his plans for the evening and sat, staring at the phone, as if daring it to ring again. The world had shifted on its axis, and he felt adrift, utterly alone. The thought of this woman... the idea of her existing… it felt like a deliberate challenge to everything he’d ever believed.
