Michael discovered the bank statements tucked away in a dusty box in the attic. The handwriting on the envelopes was unmistakably Sarah's. His heart thudded a heavy rhythm against his ribs. He felt like a stranger in his own home. He had been so proud of their financial transparency.

His breath hitched as he opened the first envelope. The balance. The growth. The years of accumulation. He felt a sting behind his eyes. He’d meticulously shared every bonus, every raise. He’d trusted her with their shared dreams.

Later, he found himself pacing the living room, the statement clutched in his hand. He’d promised to paint the guest bedroom this weekend. Now, he couldn’t bring himself to even pick up a paintbrush.
