A sudden, fierce heat burned her cheeks. She thought of the way he'd always dismissed her financial concerns, the way he'd teased her about her "frugality." She had saved every penny. He’d always acted like he needed money, too.

She found herself cleaning the kitchen with aggressive energy, scrubbing the countertops until they shone. When David entered, humming, she met his gaze, then quickly turned away, resuming her scrubbing. She ignored his greetings.
