The list was tucked inside a shoebox labeled "Memories." Ethan, sifting through his father's possessions, felt a strange tightness in his chest. “Learn to surf.” “Build a treehouse for my grandchildren.” “Fall in love again.” Ethan scoffed. His father, a creature of habit, spent his days reading and watching television. The idea of him surfing seemed ludicrous.

His hands shook as he read further, words blurring slightly. He felt a sting behind his eyes. His father had never expressed any real hobbies. He always seemed… content. Now, Ethan realized he knew so little.

He tossed the list back in the box, the lid slamming shut with a resounding thud. That was it.
