"Oh, did I forget to mention?" Emily heard Ms. Thornton say, her voice almost too sweet. "We're going to Switzerland for the summer. Just a little trip." Emily's own summer plans involved washing dishes at the local diner.

A tremor went through her. She felt her hands clench into fists as she stared out the window. Ms. Thornton, who used to complain about the price of groceries, was now casually mentioning international travel like it was a trip to the supermarket.

That evening, Emily slammed the door of her apartment a little too hard. She could feel the sting of the air in her nose. Her roommate jumped, startled. Emily excused herself and sat on the couch with a grimace.
